Company History

1930's

'31 It all started in a little wooden ice house located at the corner of Sykes & Short Streets in Roseburg Oregon. Ormond Feldkamp and Herb Sullivan founded Umpqua Dairy Products, the first products were ice cream and butter.

'38 Grown to 9 employees; Lloyd Nelson, Harvey Miller, Sam Thompson, Ira Knigge, Cotton Becroft, Milton Keller, Ed Nelson, Shirley McLaughlin and Phil Wasson. A 1934 Dodge van was the delivery vehicle.


1940's

'40's Umpqua Ice Cream was available in pints, quarts, 2 1/2 gallon containers and 5 gallon metal cans. All containers were filled by hand, as there was very little automation. During World War II, due to gas rationing and a shortage of tires, milk was delivered in a horse drawn cart.

'45 Umpqua Dairy became the first dairy in Oregon to use a round ice cream carton. The 'convocan' cartons were made by Sealright, Co. in Los Angeles and shipped by rail to Roseburg. The familiar red round carton was designed at this time.


1950's

'51 Umpqua Dairy purchased Roseburg Dairy and had grown to 25 employees. Major expansion projects started in the late 40's were now complete including milk room, cottage cheese room and ice cream room

'52 Ralph "Deacon" Lesh was hired. It was through his direction that Umpqua Ice Cream has achieved its widely acclaimed reputation for quality and good taste.


1960's

'61 BD "Bob" Feldkamp returns to the dairy and after the passing of his father Ormond in 1962 becomes President of Umpqua Dairy. The number of employees has grown to 49.

'67 Umpqua Dairy expands distribution into Josephine and Jackson Counties.

'69 Umpqua Dairy begins delivery to Coos County.


1970's

'74 A fire destroys a large portion of Umpqua Dairy, including freezers, portions of the ice cream, milk and boiler rooms. Through cooperative efforts by local dairies throughout Oregon, Umpqua Dairy was able to continue deliveries to all of its customers. We had employees working at Darigold, Meadowland, Echo Springs and Dutch Girl production facilities.

'74 Umpqua Dairy joins Quality Chekd, a national organization of independent dairies.


1980's

'81 Umpqua Dairy celebrates 50th Anniversary with the introduction of a special 'old fashioned' ice cream. Began packaging Umpqua All Natural Orange Juice.

'88 Doug Feldkamp becomes President and Steve Feldkamp becomes Vice President of Umpqua Dairy after the passing of their father, Bob Feldkamp.

'89 Umpqua Dairy introduces Lite Time Ice Milk, Light Sour Cream, Lowfat Cottage Cheese and Lite Time Milk. There are 94 employees and 33 trucks in the fleet.


1990's

'94 Opens depot locations in Portland and Klamath Falls.

'96 Installed a state of the art ice cream filler. It was the first of it's kind in the nation.

'97 Wins The Wayne Gingrich Award for Overall Plant Quality from National Quality Chek'd Association.

'98 Wins the "Best Dairy in the Nation", with the Irving B Weber Award from the Quality Chekd National Association.


2000's

'00 Recognized for 20 years of association and production with the Dairy Queen System.

'03 Umpqua Dairy Red Round Ice Cream carton gets a facelift. The red and white striped lid was replaced with a stylish blue ring.

'04 & '06 & '07 Umpqua Dairy wins #1 Dairy in the Nation with the Irving B Weber Award for Overall Excellence from Quality Chekd.

'06 Umpqua Dairy celebrates 75 years in business.


2010's

'10 Voted Best Chocolate Ice Cream and Best Cottage Cheese in the Nation at National Quality Chekd Convention Judges Competition.

'11 Voted Best Culture Products in the Northwest (Cottage Cheese, Sour Cream and Buttermilk), as well as Best Ice Cream in the Northwest at regional dairy convention.
